Rubina emphasises skill improvementfor uplift of BISP beneficiaries
Islamabad:Rubina Khalid, chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), held a meeting with representatives from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Karandaaz to discuss initiatives for improving beneficiaries’ livelihoods and enhancing the programme’s transparency.
Mrs. Khalid emphasised the importance of skill development in lifting beneficiaries out ofpoverty, aiming for them to play an active role in Pakistan’s economy.
Highlighting the need for digitalising payment mechanisms, Mrs. Khalid stated, “We want to ensure transparency with minimum human involvement in the disbursement process,” aiming to reduce fraud and ensure prompt, secure payments. Jason Lamb, Deputy Director at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, praised BISP as Pakistan’s largest social safety programme and pledged full support for further discussions on technical details. Key attendees included Syed Ali Mehmood from the Gates Foundation, and Karandaaz executives Waqas ul Hassan, Usman Kokab Khan, and Taimoor Ali.
In another meeting, Ms. Coco Ushiyama, Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), and Mrs. Khalid discussed health and nutrition initiatives. Mrs. Khalid highlighted BISP’s commitment to addressing stunting and malnutrition through the Benazir Nashonuma Programme, emphasising the link between healthy mothers and a healthy nation. Ms. Ushiyama commended BISP’s efforts and reaffirmed WFP’s support for its health projects, praising the programme’s impact on enhancing food security for vulnerable populations.
